First Sunday After Pentecost

REUNIONS WEEKEND 2024

May 26, 2024, 10:00 a.m.

You are invited to rise, in body or spirit, for those parts of the service marked with an asterisk (*)

Prelude Komm, heiliger Geist, BWV 652 Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

Veni, Creator Spiritus Gerald Near (b. 1942)

Welcome and Announcements Dean Boden

*Hymn No. 21 God Reigns o’er All the Earth Terra Beata

*Call to Worship Dean Thames

*Invocation

Reading Psalm 90:12-14

So teach us to count our days

that we may gain a wise heart.

Turn, O God! How long?

Have compassion on your servants!

Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love,

so that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

Anthem Teach Me the Measure Suffield, arr. Alice Parker (b. 1925)

Teach me the measure of my days,

Thou Maker of my frame!

I would survey life's narrow space,

And learn how frail I am.

A span is all that we can boast;

A fleeting hour of time;

We are but vanity and dust,

In all our flower and prime.

See the vain race of mortals move

Like shadows o'er the plain:

They rage and strive, desire and love,

But all the noise is vain.

What should I wish or wait for then,

From creatures, earth, and dust?

They make our expectations vain,

And disappoint our trust.

Now I forbid my carnal (earthly) hope,

My fond desires recall;

I give my mortal interest up,

And make my God my All.

Isaac Watts (1674-1748)

Reading Ephesians 5:15-16

Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil.

Sermon “Numbering Our Days” Rev. James F. Cox III ’74

*Hymn No. 491 Awake, My Soul, Stretch Every Nerve Christmas

Prayers of the People Dean Boden

If there are prayer requests that you would like to share, please raise your hand.

After each petition:

One God of love and mercy,

All Hear our prayer.

Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven,

Hallowed be thy Name.

Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done,

On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

As we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

But deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

and the power,

and the glory,

for ever and ever.

Amen.

Choral Response If You Believe and I Believe Zimbabwean, arr. John L. Bell

*Exchange of the Peace

One The peace of God be always with you.

All And also with you.

The people may exchange the peace with one another.

Offertory Sentence

Music at the Offering Achieved Is the Glorious Work Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)

Achieved is the glorious work;

The Lord beholds it and is pleased.

In lofty strains let us rejoice;

Our song let be the praise of God.

Baron Gottfried van Swieten (1733-1803)

*Doxology Sung to the tune of Hymn No. 27 Lasst uns erfreuen

Praise God from whom all blessings flow,

Praise God all creatures here below, alleluia, alleluia.

Praise God above ye heavenly hosts,

Creator, Christ, and Holy Ghost,

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

*Prayer for Princeton To be said by all.

O Eternal God, the source of life and light for all peoples,

we pray you would endow this University with your grace and wisdom:

Give inspiration and understanding to those who teach and to those who learn;

Grant vision to its trustees and administrators;

To all who work here and to all who bear her name

give your guiding Spirit of sacrificial courage and loving service. Amen.

Guest Preacher

Originally from the Philadelphia area, James F. Cox III ’74 (a.k.a. Putter) majored in architecture at Princeton. After five years in the construction business in the NY metro area, he switched careers and enrolled at Dallas Theological Seminary. Graduating in 1984, he did a pastoral internship in suburban Syracuse, which led to planting a church in Hamilton NY, home to Colgate University. He remained there for 31 years, retiring as Pastor Emeritus of Hamilton Bible Fellowship in 2016. He was also volunteer staff with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship on the campus, and served as Protestant Chaplain in the Office of the Chaplains at Colgate, 2009-2015. During his time in Hamilton he completed over 50 architectural projects, keeping his undergraduate training alive.

Putter became a Christian near the end of his time at Princeton, indirectly through the influence of campus ministries, in the context of his music group. Music has been an important avocational component of his life for 60 years, and he continues to perform as a singer-songwriter locally in his current home in Luray VA. He plays guitar, mandolin and bass in and outside of church contexts.

Putter married Clinton, NJ native Linda Deiter in 1975, after they met in church following his time at Princeton. They have two grown sons and three grandchildren. On retiring to Virginia in 2016, they established River Dell Bed & Breakfast. They remain active in local churches and in the community.

Announcements

The offering this morning will go to LALDEF, the Latin American Legal Defense and Education Fund. LALDEF is based in Trenton and serves Mercer County. LALDEF is a grassroots nonprofit organization formed to defend the civil rights of Latin Americans and facilitate their access to health care and education, as well as to advance cross-cultural understanding in the Mercer County area. They have been very active in helping our neighbors to understand their rights regarding immigration and deportation.

Every Sunday of every month the congregation is invited to bring non-perishable food items to be donated to Arm in Arm.

If you are interested in making a contribution toward Sunday flowers in the Chapel as a memorial, please contact Patricia Florek - [email protected]
